Meadowview Elementry School 5th Grader Students

After meeting all the park personnel and receiving instruction in how to plant the plants, the students planted prairie flowers and prairie grasses as well as eradicated Garlic Mustard Plants in the Flag Pole Garden, the Erratic Rocks Garden, The Butterfly Barn and on portions of the Nature Trail.  The addition of these plants will help to educate our visitors as to what plants they will see on Goose Lake prairie.

The corn snake Rosie also came out to say hello!  See the photo album for the full story.

What a fun day we had at Goose Lake Prairie April 30th, 2009.

Our 4th Grade class came from Tobin Elementary School.
A complete photo album representing our activities can be accessed on our Photo Gallery Page..

Tobin Elem 4th Grade, Earth Day in the Parks at Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area. 2009

Even though it was a damp, rainy day, many good things happened at the Goose Lake Prairie State Natural Area for the visit of the Students from Tobin Elementary School. We started the day with an emphasis on Stewardship, introducing the members of the Park Staff and the Goose Lake Prairie Partners in attendance. From there the students were shown how to plant, although conditions did not allow them to do so... We broke for a snack, were introduced to Rosie, our resident Corn Snake and then divided the class into two groups. Each group had a chance to discuss the characteristics of many animals as well as join in a race of predictors. The second activity was a game called "What Are My Needs" and was in the parking lot. It is a simulation on native and non-native plants. After the game, they moved into the Butterfly Barn to eradicate Garlic Mustard. Finally, the day was over and the students brought their lunches inside the center. After lunch they each received a gift from the IDNR representative and then boarded their bus for the drive back to their school.
I know the Students, the Teachers, the Parents and the Prairie Partners all learned things today!

Earth Day in the Parks is an event to promote stewardship of our natural resources by Illinois school children. In April each year, students and their teachers from throughout Illinois come to participating Illinois state parks to take part in natural resources stewardship activities such as: planting native trees and wildflowers; building and installing bird nesting boxes; removing invasive exotic plant species; and constructing woodland ponds for salamanders. Students will be helping the environment and wildlife, participating in outdoor activities to increase their fitness and learning that their actions
can make a difference in the world.

Students are encouraged to return to the state park to see and study the results of their work.

Who sponsors this event?

Earth Day in the Parks is sponsored by the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) in cooperation with the Illinois Conservation Foundation. Funds have been contributed toward this event from many individuals and organizations and a grant was also received from the Illinois Conservation Foundation.
